Stoney Hill is one of my favourite places to walk here in the Cowichan Valley. It is not too long and a just right climb. But the views are the big payoff. I remember the first time I went, I could feel the first view looming as I approached from the contained forest. And once I arrived! Wow. But then each view seemed to get better. I finally nestled myself on a mossy rock and just took it all in.

This piece is set in Mill Bay Nature Park. When I first moved to the valley in 2016, I was looking for outdoor places to take my class and discovered this rich location with forest, meadow, creek and ocean. It was a perfect spot to take my students on outdoor days. The kicker was a wonderful monsters face on a mossy rock. See the slide show below of our amazing days outdoors.

The Cowichan Bay Estuary is an easy walk out into a birders haven. Many photographers line the marsh. It’s a beautiful view of Saltspring Island and Mount Tzouhalem. This is a watercolour I did of the rocklined river.
