Paintings inspired by trips with friends an family in Northern Vancouver Island
My first camping trip up island was with my daughter. She and a friend had camped in a location close to Campbell river. It was pre- ‘Fern’ when I was hammock tenting and driving my Toyota Carola. Kara couldn’t remember the exact location, just that it was a logging road close to airport? We spent lots of time on bumpy roads with brush scratching the car until she finally called her friend. It was a great reminder of our times in Anahim Lake and we actually enjoyed the exploration. Turns out it was north of Campbell River and we found it before sunset with spots still available. It was on Brewster Lake and we had my kayak. Another connection to Chilcotin was our love of outhouse views. There’s nothing better that the freedom ( and fresh air) of an open door while using the facilities.
I also took a trip with a friend just last May, up to a campground on Campbell Lake. We spent the days painting along the lakeshore of beautiful scenery. I have yet to paint her dog Fin who stat like a lion watching over us.
Another trip was with a family of three. One of our friends couldn’t use her reservation at Bere Point campground on Malcolm Island. What a treasure of a place. the campground has so many personal driftwood touches that people have built over the years. And the Museum at Sointula is well worth the visit.
My most recent trip up north took me to Anutz lake. I was planning to go to Nimpkish Lake but GPS had a different plan and it was closer to a day trip I had planned to the Little Huson Caves. I know better than to use my apple maps for backcountry. The best one is BRMP ( Back Roads Mapbook) you can download maps to use when your are out of service which is very handy. Anutz had lots of wind during the day so the bugs didn’t get you. But those no-see-ums really got me in the morning. Amazing mountain views.
